Bainbridge standoff ends peacefully

Staff Report
A standoff between state police and a Bainbridge man has ended peacefully.
When police responded to an apparent domestic dispute on Johnson Street this morning, they were unable to enter the residence where a man was said to have barricaded himself, his wife and his children into an apartment. A call to Chenango County 911 at about 8:20 a.m. indicated that a woman was being held hostage at that location.
A hostage negotiator communicated with the man, who surrendered himself into police custody shortly before noon. Previous reports of shots having been fired were unfounded. The initial report to police indicated the man may have been armed, but no weapon was believed to have been used in the standoff.
Police had closed roads around the area, and the Bainbridge high and middle school and elementary school were in lockout as of about 11:30 a.m.
Roads are now open, and Superintendent Karl Brown said the school has stepped down from its lockout on advisement from law enforcement.
The subject, who was not identified by troopers, is expected to be named later today and had been involved in a separate domestic dispute in recent week.
