The 20th Congressional District special election is too close to call
March 31, 2009 | NY Special Elections, NY-20
The 20th Congressional District special election is too close to call at about 10:35 p.m.., the Associated Press and other outlets report.
Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco, a Republican, is trailing Democrat Scott Murphy by 65 votes out of more than 150,000 cast, with all precincts reporting, according to The Associated Press. Other results have Murphy up by 59 votes. Either way, as many as 6,000 absentee and military ballots have yet to be counted, with the deadline for receiving such ballots nearly two weeks away. Republicans have already filed a lawsuit requiring all paper ballots be impounded, the AP said.
Tedisco won Otsego County, 1,052 votes to 1,001, and won in Delaware County, 3,370 to 3,344, according to a separate running tally by the Albany Times Union website and the Saratogian website, respectively. Vote totals in Otsego were from the county Board of Elections website; Delaware County’s vote totals were from the Saratogian.
The race may not be officially decided until military and absentee ballots are received and counted, a process that could last until mid-April.
